Weekly Shinedown - Song Thirty Eight - I Own You!

Hey There!

The next Shinedown song that I discovered was once again during IT whilst I was continuing with my coursework around January 2015. I had all of the Shinedown deluxe albums on my computer, so whilst I was working, I was able to listen to their full albums to help pass the time quicker.

For some reason, I only really listened to the bonus tracks of The Sound Of Madness during IT, and I rarely heard them out of school. Yet some of the songs are brilliant towards the end of the album. Now whenever I listen to I Own You, or any of the other bonus tracks, it automatically reminds me of IT, and it makes me really miss the times back then!

What makes I Own You such a great song is definitely the introduction. The drum beat at the beginning, followed by the playing of the guitars really gives the song so much power, and I just love it so much. The first verse also has such strong vocals, especially the line of "all this pressure that surrounds you, holds you down you know you gotta break through" as there is just so much meaning to sure a small section of the song.

I feel that this song has more of a meaning to it than just someone having control over someone else, but it seems to represent that the person who is under control is under so much difficultly metaphorically, which obviously has impacted them massively.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the correct chords to I Own You, along with a load of other songs too, but apparently, you can buy a physical copy of all of their sheet music online, so I may look into that in the future!

Look out for more posts from me very soon!

I'll see you all next Thursday!

P.S. I'll leave the lyrics to I Own You below incase you're interested!

Come on in, take a seat.
Tell me how you feel this weak.
Are you cursed? Are you blessed?
Are you still inside the mess?
All those feelings wrapped around you,
Hold you down so you can't break through.
Its a trap, so don't ask. Its a shadow on
Your back. It don't burn, it don't bleed,
Still it cuts you at the knee.
All this pressure that surrounds you,
Holds you down but you know you
Gotta break through.

Hey, c'est la vie.
Remember me? I made you, dressed
And trained you.
Hey, it's bitter sweet.
You can't kill me with kindness,
I don't buy it.
Strip down, show me flesh and bone.
(Strip Down.)
'Cause now I own you.

Take a breath, hold it in.
Now look up, let's begin.
Lesson learned, take a turn.
Now you come around again,
All those feelings wrapped around you,
Hold you down so you can't break through.

Time is up, take your shot.
'Cause your story's all you got.
Don't back down, don't say no.
Just stay still and let go.
All this pressure that surrounds you,
Holds you down but you know
You've gotta break through.

Hey, c'est la vie.
Remember me? I made you, dressed
And trained you.
Hey, it's bitter sweet.
You can't kill me with kindness,
I don't buy it.
Strip down, show me flesh and bone.
(Strip Down.)
'Cause now I own you.

(You can't kill me with kindness, no I don't buy it.)
Strip down, show your flesh and bone.
'Cause now I own you.

Hey, c'est la vie.
Remember me? I made you, dressed
And trained you.
Hey, it's bitter sweet.
You can't kill me with kindness,
I don't buy it.
Strip down, show me flesh and bone.
(Strip Down.)
'Cause now I own you.

Now I own you.
Now I own you.
Now I own you.
You know I own you.

Weekly Shinedown - Song Thirty Seven - Enemies!

Hey There!

I remember really clearly finding out about Enemies by Shinedown. I was watching all of Shinedown's music videos that they had posted onto YouTube, and Enemies was one of their latest videos that I could find, so I decided to watch it.

I find the music video really cool, and it really got me hooked into the song. What I like most about the song is the rock guitars when the line "where did you think you could go? Cause everyone already knows" is being sang. Plus, the song is just so full of energy and vibes, that I really do love it!

Like last week, when I was talking about For My Sake, it kind of reflects my life, on having people in your life that are constantly out to get you, but although the songs are very similar, I feel that For My Sake described my past situation better than Enemies. The reason behind this is because these people were not enemies to me, and I'm not entirely sure that they were fully aware of all that they were doing. I do, however, see a connection between the two songs, and that the message behind them both is to just cut these sorts of people completely out of your life!

The chords to Enemies do not seem too complicated, and I'm sure I'll eventually be capable of playing it on the guitar. However, I sen to have an endless list of Shinedown songs that I need to learn on the guitar, and at the moment, I can only play around four fluently!

It would be great to hear some of your Shinedown stories below, and make sure you check my blog out for earlier posts from me!

I'll see you all next Thursday!

P.S. I'll leave the lyrics to Enemies down below incase you're interested!

Listen up, there's not a moment to spare
It's quite a drop from the top. So how you feeling down there?
It’s a cold, cruel, harsh reality
Got stuck here with your enemies

Who do you think you are,
Tearing us all apart?

Where did you think you could go?
'Cause everyone already knows,
It’s twenty to one
Yeah, so you better run!!!

You got the world on its knees
You’re taking all that you please
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me

You’re like the burden we bear
You’re all the hate that we share
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me
We're enemies, enemies

You started something that you just couldn't stop
You turned the ones that you love into the angriest mob
And their one last wish is that you pay for it
And there's no way you're getting out of this

Who do you think you are
Tearing us all apart?

Where did you think you could go?
'Cause everyone already knows,
It’s twenty to one
Yeah, so you better run!!!

You got the world on its knees
You’re taking all that you please
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me

You’re like the burden we bear
You’re all the hate that we share
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me
We're enemies, enemies, enemies

Where did you think you could go?
'Cause everyone already knows
It’s twenty to one
Yeah, so you better run

You've got the world on its knees
You've taken all that you please
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me

You're like the burden we bear
You’re all the hate that we share
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me

You've got the world on its knees
You've taken all that you please
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me

You're like the burden we bear
You’re all the hate that we share
You want more, you want more
But you’ll get nothing from me
We're enemies, enemies, enemies

Weekly Shinedown - Song Thirty Six - For My Sake!

Hey There!

I believe that December 2014 was around the time that I was really into Shinedown's album Amaryllis because it was quite new to me back then, and for every song that I listened to, it was brand new to me.

By the time that I was really into For My Sake, I had heard this album loads of times, and For My Sake really stuck out to me. I'm not sure why, but the drum beat to it is just incredible, and I also really enjoy the guitars that play during this song.

The meaning of this song is very dear to me. The reason behind this is because it was written about someone who was pulling the writer down, who eventually had to walk away from this person completely to be able to live their life without them, and independently. Similarly, in my life, I have experienced people who have dragged me down with them, when all I wanted to do was get away from them, and this took a long time to be possible. I do feel that Enemies by Shinedown too is kind of a sister-song to For My Sake, and you'll be hearing about Enemies later this month!

For My Sake is actually quite hard to play on the guitar, mainly due to the B-minors, but for the band members who did play For My Sake, they really did do such a great job!

Don't forget to leave your Shinedown comments below. And hopefully now that the summer holidays are over, I will be able to listen to Shinedown more of the time, and be more reliable in posting more posts!

I'll see you all next Thursday!

P.S. I'll leave the lyrics to For My Sake below incase you're interested!

I remember like yesterday
You had a dream in your eyes and a smile on your face
And I'm missing those days again, yeah I'm missing those days again
And I forgot what really got in the way
Maybe the sun that wouldn't shine should be taking the blame
Cause its raining on me again, yeah its raining on me again

A paradox
The key you dropped
A manifest
For what you lost, was me
For my sake please...

Stop slowing me down, stop holding me up
Quit making a scene, enough's enough.
Let's be honest, your promise, was never meant to last
So I'm taking you on, I'm calling you out.
There's nothing left for us here now.
Let's be honest, I promise, I'm never lookin' back for my sake.
For my sake.

Tell me something that's poetic at best
Make me believe there was a time that you weren't like the rest
And I'll never ask you again, and I'll never ask you again
For all the moments and the memories
No one could ever say we never had a history
But I'm leaving that all behind
And there is nothing gonna change my mind

A paradox
The key you dropped
A manifest
For what you lost, was me
For my sake
Please...
Stop slowing me down
Stop holding me up
Stop slowing me down
Enough's enough

Stop slowing me down, stop holding me up
Quit making a scene, enough's enough.
Let's be honest, your promise, was never meant to last
So I'm taking you on, I'm calling you out.
There's nothing left for us here now.
Let's be honest, I promise, I'm never lookin' back for my sake.
I'm never lookin' back, for my sake.
For my sake
For my sake

Weekly Shinedown - Song Thirty Five - I'm Not Alright!

Hey There!

I remember listening to I'm Not Alright really clearly. It was back in December 2014, and I was listening to Shinedown's full album called Amaryllis, and when I'm Not Alright came on, I remember getting it confused with the song Amaryllis. However, after listening to it a few times more, I was able to clearly distinguish between the two.

What I like the most about I'm Not Alright is that the song is very original, and different to what Shinedown usually stick to. For example, they used a brass band, I believe, in the recording of this song, which makes it really unique and amazing to listen to.

My favourite line of the song is "am I sick or am I gifted?" and although I'm not so sure why, the quote means quite a lot to me, and seems to have such a deep meaning. I also love the fact that the chords for I'm Not Alright are within my limits, so I'm able to play it on my guitar really easily.

Be sure to stay tuned for more posts from me in the future!

I'll see you all next Thursday!

P.S. I'll leave the lyrics to I'm Not Alright below incase you're interested!

All dressed up
In a white straitjacket
Shut your mouth
No, you can't have it

Paper airplanes
Open window
Here today
And gone tomorrow

I like to stare at the sun
And think about what I've done
I lie awake in my great escape

I like crossing the line
And slowly losing my mind
Are you ok
'Cuz I feel fine
Maybe it's me
I'm just crazy
Maybe I like that I'm not alright

All messed up
And slightly twisted
Am I sick or am I gifted

Paper airplanes
Open window
Here today
And gone tomorrow

I like to stare at the sun
And think about what I've done
I lie awake in my great escape

I like crossing the line
And slowly losing my mind
Are you ok
'Cuz I feel fine
Maybe it's me
I'm just crazy
Maybe I like that I'm not alright

Woh
I don't care if you apologize
I can't lie
Woh
I can't lie

I like to stare at the sun
And think about what I've done
I lie awake in my great escape

I like crossing the line
And slowly losing my mind
Are you ok
'Cuz I feel fine
Maybe it's me
I'm just crazy
Maybe I like that I'm not alright
Maybe I like that I'm not alright
